Windshield Chip Repair
Windshield chips commonly occur when rocks or road debris strike the glass while driving. Although a small chip may seem harmless, changes in temperature, road vibrations, and additional impacts can cause the damage to spread into a larger crack.
Repairing a chip early can often prevent the need for a complete windshield replacement, saving both time and money.
Benefits of windshield chip repair include:
- Helps prevent existing damage from spreading
- Preserves the original windshield when repair is appropriate
- Typically costs less than a complete windshield replacement
- Can improve the appearance of the damaged area
- May be covered by comprehensive auto insurance
Most repairable chips and small cracks can be treated using a specialized resin. During the repair process, air is removed from the damaged area and replaced with resin that is cured using ultraviolet light.
The repair helps restore the integrity of the damaged area and may make the chip less noticeable. However, some damage may remain visible after the repair is completed.
Whether a chip or crack can be repaired depends on its size, depth, location, and overall condition. Damage within the driver’s direct line of sight or near the windshield’s edges may require replacement.
Helpful Tip: If you recently received a small windshield chip, placing a small piece of clear tape over the damaged area may help keep dirt and moisture out until it can be inspected. Avoid placing tape where it could interfere with your visibility.
Auto Glass Replacement
Not all damaged automotive glass can be safely repaired. Large cracks, extensive impact damage, shattered glass, or damage affecting critical areas of the windshield may require replacement.
Bailey’s Auto Body provides glass replacement services for a variety of automotive applications.
Our auto glass services include:
- Windshield Replacement
- Front & Rear Side Window Replacement
- Rear Window Replacement
- Glass Replacement Following Collision Damage
- Glass Replacement Following Hail or Storm Damage
Proper glass installation is important for maintaining vehicle safety, weather sealing, and structural performance. Our team follows applicable manufacturer repair requirements and coordinates any additional procedures necessary for the replacement.
Windshield Replacement & Vehicle Safety Systems
Many modern vehicles have Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that use cameras or sensors mounted near the windshield.
These systems may support safety features such as:
- Forward Collision Warning
- Automatic Emergency Braking
- Lane Departure Warning
- Lane Keeping Assistance
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Traffic Sign Recognition
When a windshield is replaced, certain vehicles require ADAS camera calibration or additional inspections to help ensure these systems operate as designed.
Bailey’s coordinates required calibrations and inspections as part of the repair process when applicable.
Types of Automotive Glass
Automotive glass is designed to provide visibility while helping protect vehicle occupants. The two primary types used in modern vehicles are laminated glass and tempered glass.
-
Laminated Glass
Laminated glass consists of two layers of glass bonded together with a thin plastic interlayer, typically made from polyvinyl butyral (PVB).
This construction helps hold the glass together when damaged, reducing the likelihood of large pieces breaking away during an impact.
Laminated glass is used in automotive windshields and may also be used in certain side windows, depending on the vehicle.
In addition to providing visibility, properly installed windshields can contribute to vehicle structural performance and the operation of certain occupant protection systems during a collision or rollover.
-
Tempered Glass
Tempered glass is specially treated to increase its strength and resistance to certain types of impact and temperature changes.
When tempered glass breaks, it typically shatters into many small pieces rather than large, sharp shards.
This type of glass is commonly used in vehicle side windows and rear windows, although some vehicles use laminated glass in these locations.
Unlike laminated windshields, shattered tempered glass generally cannot be repaired and must be replaced.
Auto Glass Insurance Coverage
Many comprehensive auto insurance policies provide coverage for windshield and other automotive glass damage caused by events outside of a collision.
Depending on your policy, covered glass damage may include:
- Hailstorms and severe weather
- Falling tree branches or storm debris
- Rocks or other flying road debris
- Animal-related damage
- Vandalism
- Fire damage
Some insurance policies provide windshield chip repairs with little or no out-of-pocket expense, while others require a deductible. Coverage for full windshield replacement may differ from coverage for chip repairs.
If another driver is responsible for damage caused during a collision, their property damage liability coverage may apply, depending on the circumstances and insurance determination.
We recommend contacting your insurance provider to verify your specific glass coverage, deductible, and claim requirements.
